Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint

by singNsong

Genres: Fantasy, Horror, Light Novels
Pages: 259
Series: Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (light novel) #3
Rating: four-stars
Synopsis:

Dokja has been able to step one step ahead in the apocalypse thanks to his knowledge of TWSA, but what if he were to lose that advantage? In the next scenario, he must contend with others like himself—readers! The so-called “Oracles” pose a greater threat than anything Dokja has faced so far, and the most dangerous of all is their leader, a shadowy mastermind pulling the strings behind the scenes, who seems to know too much to be an ordinary reader…

Volume three of singNsong’s Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint takes us through some of my favourite stuff (which we’re already past in the manhwa translation), which especially includes the point we end this volume on — which I won’t spoil, but just — ahh. It’s such a cinematic, epic moment, and I love it.

The whole volume shows us Dokja having to improvise more, now, with other people and his own actions starting to ripple out and disturb the plot as he knows it. He’s always going to have an advantage because he knows more of the world than anyone, but some of the events are now unfamiliar, and there are other people with a high degree of foreknowledge.

I do find the historical constellations part a bit… mm. It’s hard to follow because I don’t know the history very well, and I don’t know if it maybe makes perfect absolute sense if you do — I assume so, but I don’t have a good sense for it. It is such a great moment, though, as is Sangah’s quick thinking when it looks like Dokja might be forced to hurt her.

All in all, I race through each volume and have a great time, and then mourn and pine for the next one! Which is in July, right? Right?!

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint

by singNsong

Genres: Fantasy, Horror, Light Novels
Pages: 240
Series: Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (light novel) #2
Rating: four-stars
Synopsis:

The next stop in Dokja's journey is Chungmuro, where the scale of the scenario is far greater than anything his group has faced so far. Making matters worse, the whole place is controlled by the predatory Landlord Coalition that makes the thugs in Geumho station look like a joke. Between the various opposing factions and daily monster attacks, the station is one enormous powder keg, and Dokja holds the torch! But while he is preoccupied with this complex chess board, another key player is nowhere to be seen. With Junghyeok's disappearance, Dokja is forced to consider a chilling question--if the main character of this universe dies, what happens to the rest of the world?

Book two of singNsong’s Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint gives Dokja some whole new problems, as he rejoins some of the people he previously helped to save and navigates a new scenario. There’s some really fun stuff, like the whole idea of the Cinema Dungeon, and the way Dokja tries to use his memories to the group’s advantage to take care of them.

I’m curious where his relationship with Junghyeok’s going exactly: he keeps thinking of him as an asshole, but he’s pretty obsessed, after all. I’m guessing people ship that, especially given the assumptions some of Dokja’s companions make about what he said to Junghyeok (which gets censored for them and viewers of the “stream”).

Obviously the challenges will keep growing, but I’m curious when Dokja’s changes to the world start to make it difficult for him to judge what’s coming next. You’d think that would snowball quite quickly…

In any case, looking forward to reading the third volume as soon as it’s out.

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint

by singNsong

Genres: Fantasy, Light Novels
Pages: 250
Series: Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (light novel) #1
Rating: four-stars
Synopsis:

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU WILL SURVIVE.

Kill each other within the time limit or die. It’s just another evening commute on the train, until the passengers are given an order they can’t disobey. Utter chaos ensues, but ordinary office worker Dokja Kim only feels an unsettling calm. He knows exactly how this will play out! The subway car, the passengers’ reactions, even the bizarre creature that suddenly appears to oversee this sadistic scenario...everything is straight out of his favorite story, an online novel so obscure he is its sole reader. And as the only one who knows where the plot is headed, Dokja must use his knowledge to survive the oncoming apocalypse!

I didn’t know very much about singNsong’s Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint before picking it up — I’d seen friends be enthusiastic, been recommended it if I liked Solo Leveling (which I did) and it’s mentioned in Tiny Bookshop (though that might be the manhwa adaptation). I ended up burning right through it and really wanting the next volume — there’s something very compulsive about it.

Dokja Kim has spent his whole life reading this one webnovel, reading hundreds of chapters from when he’s being bullied in school to a temp job in his thirties, and then the novel starts coming true and he’s the only one who knows exactly what’s going on: that’s definitely compelling! He’s not always the most sympathetic character (he’s got his eye on survival rather than kindness), but the net result is that he ends up minimising slaughter and saving people. Reminds me indeed of Solo Leveling and the way Jinwoo decides to only rely on himself, and then ends up taking care of the people around him and saving the world. You expect it to take a darker turn.

There’s some interesting game-like mechanics in the world, and I’m very curious where it goes — and how Dokja and the people he’s saved, people who weren’t meant to survive, will change the story.
