My policy on AI in the form of generative AI is pretty much summed up as “just fuckin’ don’t”.
I don’t use LLMs to write my posts, create graphics, write comments, or anything else I can think of. I try not to use LLMs in searches, though the ongoing enshittification of the internet makes that harder than I’d like. I try to make my own graphics for link-ups and so on where I’m aware that generative AI has been used.
That said, I’m not the world’s most observant, in part due to aphantasia: I can’t compare two things in my mind, so I have a harder job spotting when something looks “wrong”. If you spot something made by generative AI on my website, let me know and I will endeavour to remove it, or (if that’s a huge job, since I run this blog in my free time) to not use it in future.
Please don’t comment using an LLM on my blog. If I become aware, I’ll remove it. If your site contains content primarily generated by AI, or even 50/50, I’ll probably remove your links from your comments even if I allow the comments themselves to stay, to avoid being associated with LLM-generated content. See also my commenting policy for what is and isn’t permitted.
Generative AI is bad for the planet, it’s a plagiarism machine, it’s rife with inherited bias, and runs on the labour of exploited people. Part of the joy in being a human is to create stuff and to connect with other people, genuinely, one mind to another, one heart to another. Don’t surrender that for convenience, or fear of being left behind. I’m a human; be human with me too.
