After a busy week last week with lots of library books and lots of reading, this week’s been a bit quieter.
Funny thing: I had no idea, but WordPress informs me that today is my blog’s 13th birthday!
Books acquired this week
This month’s British Library Crime Classic was their Christmas release, which is how they usually do things, and that dropped onto my doormat this week:
That’s it, after the recent excesses, hahaha. I haven’t been back to the library this week, since I haven’t done a lot of reading in that time.
Posts from this week
Time for the usual roundup! Reviews first, and as ever, they’re not books I read this week but reviews written sometimes quite a while ago, since I try to keep things varied and plan in advance.
- History: A Woman’s Work: Reclaiming the Radical History of Mothering, by Elinor Cleghorn (3/5 stars, “liked it”)
- Poetry: Dream Work, by Mary Oliver (3/5 stars, “liked it”)
- Fantasy manhwa: Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, vol 3, by Sleepy-C, Umi & singNsong (4/5 stars, “really liked it”)
And as usual, I really mean it when I say 3/5 stars means I liked a book! I know other people have other rating systems, but I stick with the old Goodreads definitions that were around over twenty years ago now.
Here are the other posts from this week:
- Fantasy with Friends: Fantasy Worlds to Live In
- Top Ten Tuesday: Autumnal Colours
- What Are You Reading Wednesday
- Book Blogger Hop: Bookish Escape Room
And that’s it for the week! I hope to get back to posting more reviews again, since work should be quieting down a bit for now (though just in time for the Christmas/New Year rush, ack).
What I’m reading
As ever, I’ll start with the books I’ve been reading in the last week! Mostly last weekend — I didn’t get as much reading time as I’d have liked during the workweek, this time round. As I mentioned last week, I want to be clear: these are just the books I’ve finished this week, and I’m not saying I recommend them at this time. You’ll have to watch out for my reviews for that! Please don’t read them because I mentioned them and then blame me when you don’t like a book that I’m planning to give one star… 😉
For this weekend, I’m a chunk of the way into Rachel Harrison’s Black Sheep and Francis Vivian’s Dead Opposite the Church, so those are my priority to finish. I’d like to read more of The Summer Hikaru Died as well… but otherwise, I’m not sure. I’ll probably go by whim!
Hope everyone else has a great weekend.

I don’t know much about the British Library Crime Classics, so I’m going to look into that. I do plan to read more classics once I finish the current reading challenges I’m involved in. I’m hoping some 2027 challenges will help keep me on track with that. Hope you enjoy Call a Hearse, and don’t find too many 1 stars in your current reads 🙂
I enjoy the series a lot! It’s been unearthing some real treasures that slipped out of print.
Looks like some fun books in your queue! Heading over to some of your other posts.
I’ve been slow on blogging, but not on the reading, haha.
Happy blogiversary! I think mine was in August, but I completely forgot about it. 🙂

I usually forget too! It was just that WordPress popped something up.
For you, the arrival of only one new book is a slow week! lol. You always have intriguing books on your shelves. I wonder what inspired you to read an older Mary Oliver collection.

Haha, I don’t intend to be always acquiring, but somehow it happens anyway!
I’ve been steadily working my way through Mary Oliver’s collections as I run into them.
Happy 13 years of blogging! It looks like you’ve got some fun current reads, I’m looking forward to hearing more about them
I’ve been reading so much, ahaha. This readathon has really lit a fire under me.
Lol I didn’t know Wicker was a book first! I will be looking for your thoughts on it.
It’s more of a short story! I’m curious how they’re going to adapt it into a full film.
Congrats on the blogversary. I’ve never heard of British Library Crime Classics but I’ll look it up, as I love crime novels. Hope you have a good reading week.

I love the British Library Crime Classics series, they’ve done an amazing job reprinting some neglected treasures. I think E.C.R. Lorac is my favourite of the authors they’ve been republishing!
Congratulations on your 13th blogging anniversary – that is an achievement. Have a great week.
Thank you!

YES!!! Thank you!!!! Books are usually either a 1 star for me or a 5 star, rarely in between, but I do use 3 when I LIKED a book but wasn’t hyperventilating over the greatness of it. And I use 4 stars when it WOULD’VE been a 5 star except for one thing, like, animal abuse or all the characters being complete idiots and neither likeable or hateable. lol
And I’m still shaking my head at people thinking your What I’m Reading section is endorsements of those books.

I’m quite similar, haha. I use 2/5 a bit as well if I’m just left going “…well, I don’t want to throw it across the room, but I don’t think I had fun”.
The cover on that Crime classic is lovely. I hope you have a great reading week!

They always have such good cover design!
Hope you have a great week!
You too!
I need a week when I only add one book to my LibraryThing account. Last week, unfortunately wasn’t that week for me. I don’t read many classics but mystery classics might be an exception. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
Haha, I tend to be a bit boom and bust — loads of books in one go and then fewer or none.
Happy Blogiversary! I’ve been wanting to read classic mysteries. I usually only read contemporary books. Hope you enjoy your books. Have a great week!

Oh there are some really good ones! The British Library Crime Classics are a decent way to dip your toe in, and I know there’s a series of American ones too (though I find American crime stories generally less cosy).
