Stacking the Shelves

So, it’s Saturday and time for Stacking the Shelves, which I tooootally don’t look forward to all week… It’s a meme where you show off your haul for the week, hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. (Hi to everyone dropping by from there.)

So anyway. It was going to be a very sad and empty week, haul-wise. Then I was browsing the Kindle store while feeling cranky, which I probably shouldn’t do. And this resulted…

Kindle books

Cover of Border Country by Raymond Williams Cover of Make Room for the Jester by Stead Jones Cover of A Heyday in the Blood by Geraint Goodwin Cover of Flame and Slag by Ron BarryΒ  Cover of The Water-Castle by Brenda Chamberlain Cover of Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman Cover of Devil's Cape by Rob Rogers Cover of Black and White by Caitlin Kettridge and Jackie KesslerCover of Vicious by V.E. Schwab Cover of Don't Be A Hero by Chris Strange

Comics (collection)

Cover of Dark Reign: Young Avengers

Comics (issues)

Cover of Ms Marvel issue #1 Cover of Captain Marvel issue #1

I’d say spot the theme, but the covers pretty much give it away. (Welsh books and superheroes, if you didn’t get it. I love some of the superhero covers — they’re all novels apart from Dark Reign: Young Avengers, but each I think has a bit of a reference to comics in the cover art.)

So, uh, the Dark Reign cover actively infuriates me, because that’s Billy Kaplan there with Enchantress, and — he’s gay, actually. I don’t know what the hell they were thinking with that cover. He has a boyfriend in the comics, he’s with him the whole time except for a brief break during the most recent issues. It looks very much like a ridiculous attempt toΒ de-gay him, and I hate it. But hey, at least I also got the first issue of the new Ms. Marvel and the 2014 Captain Marvel, which I’m excited about and haven’t been able to get in physical form locally, so finally got on ComiXology. I also set up subscriptions to both, because hey.

Of the other books, I can’t decide what I’m most interested in or want to start with. Hm. Maybe Make Room for the Jester, just because I’m curious that Philip Pullman has written the introduction. Or The Heyday in the Blood, because one of my lecturers from my BA wrote the introduction!

What’s everyone else been getting? What’re you getting excited about?

I’ve heard Vicious is a good book! And I have to admit, I’m loving the cover of Devil’s Cape for some reason. πŸ˜‰ YAY FOR COMICS THOUGH. Love. My StS!

    • Yeah, when I was browsing I saw so many good reviews! I’m quite fond of most of the covers this week really — except Dark Reign. *irritated grumbling*

      Thanks for commenting!

  2. Great haul! Vicious and Black & White are both on my TBR pile somewhere around here so looking forward to hearing what you think of them. I’m intrigued by the synopsis for Make Room for the Jester and might accidentally buy a copy later on today!

Enjoy your new books & comics, happy reading πŸ™‚

    • I’m hoping to get round to them really soon, but. Uh. Massive TBR pile. And hey, if you have a Kindle then Make Room for the Jester is less than Β£1. (Quite a few of the Library of Wales books are, actually.)

    • Thanks!

In the comics since they seem to have upped the gay, if anything, but I can’t understand that cover being chosen for the TPB. It makes no sense and grosses me out a bit because Billy and Teddy are so cute together and Billy wouldn’t, what, cheat on him? as this implies.

  3. I’m not really familiar with any of these titles as I don’t read the comics but I hope you enjoy them. I agree with you about that cover-if the character is gay it seems weird to have a woman hanging round his neck! Thanks for visiting my blog!

    • It was fun looking for superhero novels — I read Carrie Vaughn’s a while back and got slightly hooked on the idea… I hope the whim pays off, haha. Thanks for commenting!

  4. Once again, you’ve got a selection of books I know nothing about! Ha, I always feel really behind when I don’t know of books! I hope you enjoy them πŸ™‚

Mostly unfamiliar books to me, except Vicious. I intend to read that someday! Thanks for visiting Annette’s Book Spot! Enjoy your haul!

  6. I haven’t heard of your books before, but no book on Wales can be a bad thing! (Although, I’m probably biased as a Welsh person). πŸ™‚ I hope you enjoy them all, and thank for stopping by.

    • I’m Welsh too, let’s be biased together. And yeah, a bunch of books by Welsh writers that’ve been republished by Parthian are really cheap on the Kindle store, so hence my little spree…

And the Young Avengers is usually so good about representation too! That is so weird to me.

As always I look forward to your book reviews for my wishlist ^u^

    • It really is. I suspect that it’s a problem with it being a tie-in comic to a bigger event and having a different author. I’ll be sure to mention how it plays out in my review!

      Hee. Thanks!

  8. You are the second person who picked up Vicious this week. I added it to my TBR list a while ago, but I haven’t read it yet. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!!

Thanks for stopping by my STS!!

Superheroes always make for a great theme! The only one of these that I’ve read was Vicious, and it’s excellent. Enjoy!
