Happy weekend! With my birthday coming up on Thursday 20th, this is my last push to tidy up my TBR a bit ready for birthday books… Wish me luck.

Books acquired this week

I’m still trying to whittle things down so I can get books for my birthday, but I did get a couple of manga this week for some lighter reading!

My Younger Knight Takes Care of Me in Another World is a bit of a silly series (and a very clear ripoff of The Other World’s Books Depend on the Bean Counter), but it was a fun palate cleanser. As for Love in the Palm of His Hand, I hadn’t realised that volume three had been out for a while, so I eagerly snagged that!

And of course, my British Library Crime Classic subscription book came in:

There’s been plenty of wordcount posted on the blog this week and I wouldn’t blame anyone who waits for the roundups or couldn’t keep up this time! So here’s the rundown, reviews first:

As usual, don’t forget that most of these reviews are for books I read weeks or months ago, because I pre-write the reviews and post them in a spread-out way to provide variety. Also, 3/5 is a perfectly good rating, since for me it means “liked it”, and I give 5/5 rarely!

And as for my plans for this weekend… well, my birthday/holiday trip approaches, with just three working days left, so I really need to get my read on if I want to finish some more books in order to clear the decks for the trip. I’m planning on finishing up Shen Tao’s The Poet Empress, reading my new British Library Crime Classic, and… I’m not sure what else. Lots, hopefully!

      I think all that matters with rating systems is that they’re internally consistent! A single rating isn’t that much use on its own, but if you can see the pattern of how someone rates, it starts to make a lot more sense… for me, anyway. So it doesn’t bother me when other people use different systems!

      Thank youuu! I’m not sure if I’ll be getting any books for my actual birthday day — not from my wife, anyway, because we’re saving that for the indie bookshop spree we’ve arranged, ahaha.

      I don’t think I can do that, ahaha. But I’m going to try to focus on finishing some of the books on the go so I don’t have to take too many.

    Also struggling with my rating system! I think you tend to rate a little lower than me, on average, and I’m a little lower than the average reviewer. Many people (myself included) see three stars and think that a book is verging on DNF territory, when I typically mean that it’s a solid workhorse book that didn’t blow me away.

    I’m also trying to be more consistent with myself, but that alone is proving challenging!

      I wouldn’t say I struggle with it, except in that other folks don’t seem to understand/accept it, even when I post the meanings in every review… I even usually finish books I rate 2/5 stars, though often it’s hard for me to decide how I feel about a book until the end, so I do finish and review a fair number of one and two star books.

    I always have high hopes that I’ll type my reviews well in advance and schedule them to post, but it never happens that way. Someday hopefully I’ll have my act together. Have a great week. 🙂
