Stacking the Shelves

Hey all! This weekend I’m away, so I won’t be visiting people back properly until Tuesday… but here I am and sharing my haul for this week. Since I wrote this post (it’s pre-scheduled), I’ll have gone to a bookshop with my wife and one of our best friends, so… shenanigans have probably occurred. All the more reason to do a post this week to make room!

Books acquired this week:

I got a couple of requests from Tor/Bramble this week: after spotting it on somebody else’s StS, I couldn’t resist The Spellshop. It had me at “cottagecore cosy fantasy”, and then I got to the part about the sentient spider plant and I knew I had to request it. I’ve also been meaning to pick up Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea for a while, since it’s been compared to Legends & Lattes, which I loved. So, thanks, Tor/Bramble!

Reviews posted this week:

Time for a quick recap! Each thumbnail points to the review post for that book.

Cover of One Hundred Nights of Hero by Isabel Greenberg Cover of Shady Hollow by Juneau Black Cover of Around the World in 80 Plants by Jonathan Drori

So that’s been a week! How’s everyone doing? I promise I’ll visit back once I get back from my trip — but for now I’ve left my laptop behind so that I can’t possibly be tempted to work. And next week I’ll probably have some treasures to share…

  1. Being human has caught my eye! I hope that you enjoy all of them.

P.S. (In response to your comment on my site) My website is set for me to manually approve links to avoid spam.

    • Hi Jodie! Nope, that’s not what I meant. Your site literally errors out with a page that says “forbidden” with some kind of comment about spam, and doesn’t submit anything at all when I try to write a comment including a HTML link — that’s when you write (a href=”URL”)text to make linkable(/a), only with chevrons instead of brackets. When I took that out and only pasted the link, it worked and added it to your moderation queue… But only when I did that. HTML is very commonly used to add formatting to messages, and you probably should support it rather than having your site throw an error as if it’s spam. It’s not automatically any more spammy than a pasted link (actually it may be more likely to be a human, since they’re bothering to format it to look nice). If you don’t know what that all means, maybe you can ask your blog host to look into it.

Being Human is a book I’ve already read (that’s why it’s in the books reviewed this week section), so you can click the thumbnail to find out more.

      • Nicky – I understand what you are saying completely but I don’t like links being left on my site that have nothing to do with the meme I’m participating in. In the past I’ve had random links left which link to advertising or other spam. This is why I maintain control over approving any message on my site. If we are participating in a common meme such as Stacking the Shelves you can be rest assured your comment will be approved. Many other bloggers do the same.

        • I was talking about my comment being completely rejected (not entered in your moderation queue) — it went to a totally separate screen that informed me my comment was forbidden, rather than doing the usual thing where it shows that the comment is pending moderation. I had to go back a page and rephrase it before I could get it submitted for approval. I have comments set to require moderation for first time posters too, and I’m not even slightly new to blogging and visiting others’ blogs, so I know what that looks like and how it works. 🙂 This wasn’t that.

I did try again now to do it and it worked, so maybe you fixed it or the problem was narrower than it seemed, like some combination of words (but I’m not going to do extra tests, that’d be too much like my day job :p). Hopefully it isn’t showing up for too many people.

Edited: my darn page is eating my emojis! So that’s something for me to look into…
