It’s Friday, so it’s time for the Book Blogger Hop again, hosted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer. I’ve made my own image from a stock photo (credit: Anna Shvets) to avoid adding images created via generative AI to my blog. Feel free to use it too if you would like!
This week’s prompt is about whether you’re a writer:
Do you see yourself more as an editor, a writer, or just a reader?
Setting aside the work I do on this blog (which involves all three, heh), I’m mostly a reader, but I do write as well — even discounting my blogging and the writing I do for my various clients, and my two dissertations (I believe that’s “theses”, in US terms — they were for my MA and BSc), I write stories, usually just for myself (though I have been known to write and post fanfiction when the mood strikes). I’ve also done some science communication writing, but again, informally.
I have done some formal editing work, editing dissertations and theses for people who don’t speak English as a first language. My favourite was on Cappadocian cave churches!
But mostly, I’m “just” a reader with a blog and a backlog of books that’d make a pile so tall it probably is worthy of being called “mount TBR”.
You’ve definitely worn all three hats! Editing dissertations sounds like quite an undertaking, and Cappadocian cave churches must have been fascinating. I can definitely relate to Mount TBR! Happy Reading!

At least some institutions ask for quite short dissertations! Some of them were surprisingly pithy.
I look at it pretty much the same way – I definitely have my own Mount TBR. 🙂

I didn’t get a masters degree solely because my school required a thesis. I got my degree in Mathematics I chose that degree so I didn’t have to write!! I’ve never read a thesis but if it was about cool topics like Cave Churches then I would probably like it!

Both dissertations/theses I’ve done were optional, and I opted out of doing a dissertation for my BA and MSc in order to fit in more electives. But my BA and MA were in English literature, so there was really no avoiding the writing part. 🙂
Here a thesis is for a Master’s and a dissertation is for a doctorate. I took the comps (comprehensive exams) for my Master’s instead of doing a thesis.
I would love to be an editor so much, working for a publisher. It would be a dream. I’ve been writing stories since I was little, but have not written anything of substance in the last 15 years *sigh*

It’s the other way round here, heh. Dissertation for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and thesis for a doctorate. I chose not to do a dissertation in my BA and MSc in order to do more electives instead.
I would have done the same thing in your shoes! My Bachelor’s didn’t require a thesis either. It varies by program I would guess.

I did do one for my MA and BSc, even though it was optional for my BSc at least (not sure about my MA, but I think so), because I had topics I wanted to write about and the electives weren’t as appealing. But there was sooo much I’d have missed out on in my MSc if I’d done a dissertation/project instead of electives (and also because it was distance learning, it would’ve been kinda tricky for me to get lab access and data anyway).
Technically, you’re supposed to do a dissertation to earn an Honours degree, in the UK. But Cardiff University’s setup meant that all modules required the research skills demonstrated by a dissertation, so you could still get an Honours degree via electives, and I rode on that, heh.
First, I thank you for creating an image from a stock photo rather than using AI. I do write poems and a bit of a memoir and some stories, but it’s only for myself.
