Stacking the Shelves & The Sunday Post

Posted January 13, 2024 by Nicky in General / 48 Comments

Greetings! It’s been a rough week for me that featured an urgent trip to the eye casualty unit. I’m recovering pretty well given the givens, and escaped with just a corneal abrasion and multiple antibiotics to apply every couple of hours, but I’m a tad limited on how long I can use screens without eye strain right now.

Biscuit Bun is really very sorry for causing all this…

As ever, linking up with Reading Reality’s Stacking the Shelves, Caffeinated Reviewer’s The Sunday Post, and the Sunday Salon over at Readerbuzz.

Books acquired this week:

I may have had a book-buying spree to help make me feel better, even though it’s only just been Christmas and there’s already plenty on my TBR heap…

Cover of Soonish by Zach & Kelly Weinersmith Cover of Forgotten Peoples of the Ancient World by Philip Matyszak

Cover of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Bettany Hughes Cover of Glitter by Nicole Seymour

Cover of We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian Cover of Heartstopper vol 5 by Alice Oseman Cover of Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett Cover of The Cleaving by Juliet E. McKenna

Bit of a mix, as usual! I’m excited about The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which Waterstones had on sale a biiit before the release date. I was lucky: I walked in just as one of the booksellers put this on the shelf.

I also received a few of books to review:

Cover of The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler Cover of Navigational Entanglements by Aliette de Bodard Cover of Cascade Failure by L.M. Sagas Cover of A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall

If you saw my Top Ten Tuesday post, you’ll have noticed this means I actually got several of the books I’m most looking forward to in the first half of 2024, which is really nice!

Posts from this week:

I didn’t post as many reviews this week due to it being a really bad week, but there were plenty of posts to recap, all the same!

And other posts:

What I’m reading:

It’s been mostly graphic novels so far this week, which were short and easy while I was stressed, but I did also finish (and love) A City on Mars, by Zach and Kelly Weinersmith. Over the weekend I hope to get stuck into some of my new non-fic reading, and polish off a novel or two.

Assuming my eye holds up, anyway… I’ll skip the preview of reviews to come because I’m not on my usual computer and I need to take a break from my screen now.

How’s everyone else doing? A better week than mine, I hope!

  1. Eeep! Hope the eye heals soon, and lucky it wasn’t worse! I’ve had a week with so many good things starting to pop up that it’s making me a little suspicious! Long may it last, though!

    • Biscuit Bun feels very guilty about it all, I’m sure! She didn’t mean to send me to hospital. (She really was very subdued that whole day.)

Maybe you were just balancing me out, and it’s all gonna be fiiiiine.

  2. Oh no!!! I am SO sorry, I had a corneal abrasion a few years ago and won’t tell you the way mine progressed, but I hope yours heals very quickly. The eye drops every few hours are a pain to remember. Maybe listen to some audiobooks while your eye heals.

    • So far mine’s looking okay, thank goodness! I went straight to get it checked up and they were very thorough, so now I just have to make sure to remember all my eye drops (especially because the injury was inflicted by an animal).

    • I’m improving a lot each day, so I hope it’ll be all settled down soon.

I’ve only just heard about the series, so I’m excited to give it a try. It seems right up my alley!

  3. Oh no! I’m so sorry to read about your eye injury. I hope you heal quickly I fully support buying books to make yourself feel better. My daughter and I adore the Heartstopper books.

    • Thank you! The books worked to make me feel better, at least, haha.

The Heartstopper books are just lovely — I read the new one so quickly!

    • Yes! I was even trying to read on the day it happened, with the eyepatch over one eye, hahaha. It wasn’t easy, but I was determined. XD It’s getting better quickly though!

  4. Oh no – the eye injury sounds horrible. Glad it seems to be healing okay and I hope your recovery continues. I hope you enjoy The Cleaving as much as I did when you get to it. And I’ve just finished the second Emily Wilde book and they’re a treat:)). In the meantime, take care of yourself and maybe consider audiobooks to cut down on the eyestrain. They’ve been my lifesaver during my long covid fatigue, when I’ve been too tired to read.

    • It stopped hurting pretty quickly, at least — it’s just a bit blurry, still.

I’ve started on The Cleaving, and I’m intrigued so far! I have lots of opinions about Arthurian literature as it was my specialism when I studied literature, but I don’t get prescriptive about it, if that makes sense.

  5. I’m sorry about your eye, I hope Biscuit Bun is giving you lots of cuddles to make up for it! The Notebook sounds fascinating, as someone who loves writing on paper and keeping lots of notebooks! Every time I visit your blog, I always add at least one new book to my TBR. You are a very bad (good!) influence on my bookshelves!

    • Alas, I’m away from home so no bunny cuddles yet, but once I’m home again I’m gonna squidge all three of them so much. XD

Hahaha, oops?? I’m looking forward to The Notebook, though, it sounds so good!

  6. We had some issues this week but it’s better and I myself have been fine. You got some great new reads. I really enjoy Courtney Milan and I don’t usually like historical romance. Those UK covers for the Emily Wilde books are amazing. If I collected hardcovers I would be all over those. I hope you are much better this week.

    • I’m really looking forward to Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries after everything people have said! I only just learned about it.

      Thanks for dropping by!

  7. So sorry to hear about your eye. I’m glad it’s just an abrasion and not something worse. I hope the antibiotics and everything else you do helps your eye heal quickly!

  8. Oh no! I hope you recover quickly, that would be scary!

Encyclopedia of Faeries and Seven Wonders sound great. I’m planning on reading Faeries soon. Love the cover of the Cleaving too. Reminds me of Charles Vess art a little. And City on Mars I need to get. 🙂

    • Thank you! I seem to be recovering very well, hoping for confirmation of that from the eye clinic soon and then back to normal.

You’re right, it’s definitely a Charles Vess kind of aesthetic!

    • I think I saw your review, yes! My wife really loved The Mountain in the Sea, and I’ve been hearing good things about this one, so I’m eager to give it a shot.
