Good afternoon, folks!
General update
As you’ll have noticed, I’ve been queuing up some of my backlog of reviews — mostly written during the Final Fantasy XIV dungeon “The Praetorium”, since you get good items from it at the moment… but it has looooong unskippable cutscenes!
What have I been up to? Mostly playing Final Fantasy XIV, along with the Mass Effect remaster. If any of you play FFXIV, say hi sometime, we can run a dungeon or something! I’m on Cerberus server, and I can let you know my avatar’s name…
I have been reading a bit, though; I’ve gone back to reading a whole bunch of books at once, and I’m using Beeminder to help track them and keep me from putting them down and forgetting about them for ages. Here’s how I’m doing with Maryn McKenna’s Beating Back the Devil, for example!
Stacking the Shelves
This week I don’t have too many new books in — last week’s splurge was actually kind of out of character for me lately. However, I did pick up Tasha Alexander’s A Fatal Waltz in paperback, since it came back into stock, and I’ve just got a new book to review because I remembered one of you guys talking about it recently, and it has a pretty cover.
Books read this week
I’ve actually finished a few books this week, which isn’t so common lately!
Reviews posted this week
- Death in Fancy Dress, by Anthony Gilbert (3/5 stars) – A classic mystery
- Word by Word, by Kory Stamper (4/5 stars) – Non-fiction about writing a dictionary
- A Murderous Relation, by Deanna Raybourn (4/5 stars) – historical mystery and romance
- The Angel of the Crows, by Katherine Addison (5/5 stars) – Sherlock Holmes pastiche with a fantasy twist
- Long Live Latin, by Nicola Gardini (1/5 stars) – Non-fiction designed to get you reading Latin
So that’s it! What have you guys been stacking up, devouring, or flinging across the room in despair?
I’m in the same situation, books being read, but I’m about 2 weeks behind in reviews.

I’ve got most of them written, but I’ve got about a month’s worth to post if I post a review every day! Yikes.
Became curious about After The Dragons seeing your post – I don’t think I’ve heard of it before, but the cover caught my eye. It’s gorgeous!
Yeah, it looks great! Probably helps that that kind of blue is one of my favourite colours, heh.
I love a good game that really sucks you in! I’ve been wanting to get back to Star Wars: The Old Republic, which I used to love…
I haven’t read Tasha Alexander in ages, but I remember liking Fatal Waltz. I think I read the first five or so of that series…
Have a nice week!

Final Fantasy XIV has reaaaally sucked me in. What’s nice is that my wife is playing it too, so we get up to hijinks together. 😀
I’m really enjoying Tasha Alexander’s series, for sure. I’m having an irritating amount of trouble getting hold of the paperbacks though.
Thanks for dropping by!
I love that cover. I think I have the old Alexander covers, if they’re all that cool looking I may have to track down the new ones. 🙂
The print run by Constable are definitely all this style of cover! I have the first three so far and they make a pretty neat set.
My brother-in-law is really into Mass Effect remastered. Both of your new books sound good. I’ve been wanting to try Cynthia Zhang’s work. I have only read the first book in the Victoria Speedwell series and enjoyed it. I need to get back to the series. I hope you have a great week, Nicky!

It’s a great game series; so glad they remastered it so I could play again.
Thanks for dropping by! Hope you have a good week too.
Great cover on A Fatal Waltz! I’ll have to look that one up.

It’s a lovely series! The first book is And Only To Deceive. 🙂 Bit of romance, bit of mystery.
What a gorgeous looking cover on After the Dragons.
Have a great week and happy reading.

Isn’t it?! It really caught my eye — that and, you know, dragons!
I always read a bunch of books at once…and inevitably forget to finish them all because I keep picking new ones up. Happy reading!
Yeaaah… that’s why I track them with my handy graphs. I only have to read 5 pages a day, but I still have to read!
Both of the books you got this week have cool covers! I want to read that Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs book. Maybe I’ll get around to it some day! Hope you’re having a good week!

It’s mostly a fairly general physics 101, with some interesting ideas right at the end, but it was enjoyable enough! I’d been meaning to read it forever too — who wouldn’t want to, with that title? Heh.
Thanks for dropping by! 😀
I am so far behind in reviews it is not even funny. Check out my ‘Upcoming Reviews’ sometime and you will instantly feel better about your own schedule!
Yup, you deeefinitely have me beat, whoa!
