Good morning, folks! I’m finally better from my cough… at least mostly, though if you look at me wrong I might go off into a little coughing fit, alas. I’ve just ordered a bunch of background reading for my course, but it hasn’t all arrived yet, so I only have a small stack of books to share this week: a couple of ARCs and a novella.
Oh, and here’s the obligatory away-from-buns bunny picture:
Received to review:
I’ve already readΒ Close Encounters with Humankind, which is pretty fascinating; I can’t remember the summary ofΒ Valiant Dust, so that one’s going to be a surprise…
Bought:
I’ve been curious about this since N.K. Jemisin mentioned it in her column, so I picked it up with what was left of an Amazon voucher after buying stuff related to my classes.
Read this week:
A bit better week for reading, this week! Here’s hoping I get back into top form soon…
Reviews posted this week:
–The Hammer and the Cross,Β by Robert Ferguson. A little dry and very detailed; a very good read for someone who’s really interested, though.Β 4/5 stars
–A Very British Murder,Β by Lucy Worsley.Β A fun book covering the evolution of crime fiction in the UK, and people’s love of it.Β 4/5 stars
–Machiavelli: A Man Misunderstood,Β by Michael White.Β Another good biography from White.Β 4/5 stars
–The Man Who Fell to Earth,Β by Walter Tevis.Β I didn’t love this, but the way it ended was perfect — it made so much sense with what we see in reality. Hence,Β 4/5 stars
–The Bear and the Nightingale,Β by Katherine Arden.Β This didn’t quite work for me, and I’m not sure why. I guess it felt rather predictable/typical in some ways.Β 3/5 stars
–How We Got To Now: Six Innovations that Made the Modern World,Β by Steven Johnson.Β Good points and a pretty entertaining read, but nothing earth-shatteringly surprising.Β 3/5 stars
–The Lost City of Z,Β by David Grann.Β Really, I want the book about the archaeology being done now, rather than about Victorian explorers, but it’s reasonably entertaining all the same.Β 3/5 stars

I was interested in reading The Twilight Pariah but recent reviews I’ve read lead me to believe it might not be my thing after all. I’ll be curious to see what you think of it.

Hmmm, interesting. What has made you think you wouldn’t like it? Maybe I can address that in my review.
I can’t imagine how you finished 5 books in a week! I can hardly finish one π those bunnies are so cute. We had bunnies too but then we gave them away when we were shifting homes π
Great haul. Happy reading.

Ugh, I can’t imagine giving away my buns. They’re house rabbits, so it’d be like giving away a cat or dog! Too much part of the family for me, I’d miss them so much. They’ll have to come with us when we move to the UK permanently. π
Thanks for dropping by!
I envy you on reading and reviewing so many books in a week. I could really narrow down my TBR pile if I could read that fast. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a great week! π
Haha, and yet I never seem to catch up with myself! Too many shiny books out there. π Thanks for returning the visit!
Your bunnies are too cute :)) I can barely finish off a book in a week nowadays, it’s incredible that you can read five. I really need to figure out how to keep reading at a good pace because there’s so many books I want to get to π
I’ve had a copy of The Prince for a couple months now, so your review of Machiavelli: A Man Misunderstood caught my eye. Hehe, don’t mind me I’ll just be catching up on some of your reviews π I hope you continue to have great reading weeks and that your cough fully goes away!

And don’t they know it! They’re little menaces. π I normally read about a book a day, but I’ve been slowing with age…
It’s a good biography, actually! I enjoyed it.
The Twilight Pariah looks very tempting. Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
I’m still thinking over what to say about that one in a review! But if you like creepy stories, it might be up your street. π Thanks for visiting back!
Oh your bunnies are so cute!
And I’m very curious about The Twilight Pariah! I hope you’ll enjoy both that and your other new books, Nikki!
Have a fantastic weekend and happy reading.

I’ve read it already, haha! Read it last night just before bed… bad idea.
BUNNIES! Your bunnies are the cutest. I so want a little bunny when I get my own place. π Valiant Dust looks good! I’m curious about it. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!
Have a wonderful weekend, Nikki. =)

They are and they know it, the spoilt little fluffbombs. π Thanks for dropping by!
Love the bunnies. I have Twilight Pariah too but haven’t read it yet. Glad you are feeling better.
I found it fun, though not exactly groundbreaking. Hope you enjoy! π
heey!
You seem to have had a productive week!
Have a nice week!
Thanks for returning the visit! π
Valiant Dust looks good! Very curious about that one. And good luck with The Twilight Pariah, it was a quick and fun story but I wish it had been as half as creepy sounding as its blurb.

It was quite fun for a horror novella, though it could’ve been more original. Thanks for dropping by! π
Cute bunnies! Not familiar with the titles but I hope you enjoyed them this week!
Thanks! π
