Top Ten Tuesday

This week’s theme from The Broke and the Bookish is “top ten hyped books I’ve never read”. Hmmm, let’s think…

  1. Breaking Dawn, Stephanie Meyer. I read Twilight, because I thought I ought to give it a chance, but it’s really not for me and I have a whole lot of objections to it.
  2. Divergent, Veronica Roth. I think it’s technically on my TBR somewhere.
  3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling. Though I am planning to read this soon, ’cause I’m doing a readalong with some other folks.
  4. City of Bones, Cassandra Clare. Doesn’t really appeal, especially since I know about the author’s history of plagiarising.
  5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson. I have this to read, but I’m pretty uninspired about getting round to it.
  6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky. It’s never appealed at aaaall.
  7. The Fault in Our Stars, John Green. It really doesn’t sound like my thing, even if cancer didn’t freak me out unbearably.
  8. A Game of Thrones, G.R.R. Martin. I am actually going to read this. Eventually.
  9. On the Road, Jack Kerouac. I’m sorry, I hated it.
  10. The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks. Not my thing at aaaaall.

What about you guys? And are you listing books you intend to read someday, or books you never read?

  1. I liked the Twilight series at the time though the books were pretty slow at getting into the story. I think if I reread them now I might not want to keep them-but I’ll get to stuff like that once the tbr is under control! I found out about the author of City of Bones just before I read the book so I found myself looking for things stolen from other books. I was sitting doing this ‘hmm that is stolen from Buffy’ ‘that’s from Harry Potter’ and so on. It was impossible to read it objectively. I agree with you about On the Road-I thought it was dreadful! Nice list!

    • I did give the first book a chance, but it really wasn’t for me. I try not to be a snob about it, but gah, really don’t like that series. And Cassandra Clare… I haven’t even given her a chance up to now, because I’m so wary about the plagiarism thing. Sigh.

  2. Great list! City of Bones made my list too, but I have no intention of reading it. It’s not really my thing and I don’t like how Cassandra Clare speaks to some of her fans; she seems to get really snitty when people say they didn’t like the way she ended her Infernal Devices trilogy. I DNFed Divergent; I didn’t believe the worldbuilding at all and I thought Tris had zero personality.

  3. Wow that is alot of hyped books LOL

I think you just need to finish reading Breaking Dawn if you’ve already read the other books BUT.

Divergent, HP and The Fault in our stars are definitely must reads!

Wow I didn’t know that about Cassandra Clare, now I’m going to be looking at her books differently 🙁

    • I’m definitely not going to read The Fault in Our Stars — I wasn’t a big fan of the other stuff I’ve read by John Green, and cancer freaaaaaks me out.

  4. If you read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – which I really hope you do, as it is one of my faves- just push on past page 80. Its a little slow in the beginning but flies once Lisbeth enters.

  5. The Perks of Being a Wallflower has never appealed to me that much either, despite the fact that I usually love those kinds of books and I absolutely LOVED the movie. The book, though, is so . . . short. Books that short tend to fall short for me.

I haven’t read A Game of Thrones either, but I kinda want to!

  6. Just skip Divergent and Game of Thrones. I would if I knew what I was getting myself into. (Obviously, you should do and read what you want, I’m just sayin’) 🙂
I didn’t particularly like Divergent or Insurgent but I read Allegiant anyway because I wanted to finish the serie sand it was such a letdown…
As for GoT – I loved the series at first but then almost all of my favourite characters died and there was so much pointless violence and the waiting between the books was killing me so I fell out of love with it. Eh.

Hmm, apart from a number of classics (I can’t read ALL of them, sadly), I’d say The Magicians by Lev Grossman (tried it and didn’t like it), and most of Gaiman’s opus (I’m definitely reading those someday) would make the top of my list this week..

  7. I’ve read quite a few of these, all except one actually:

Breaking Dawn – Painful and so not worth your time, you’re smart not to make yourself suffer through it.

Divergent – I enjoyed this one enough, but disliked two and hated three and don’t think the series is really worth the effort.

HP and the Half-Blood Prince – LOVE this book and LOVE the series.

City of Bones – Read it once and didn’t really enjoy it. Own all books though so might try it again. Getting some signed at YALC, but will end up giving away if I don’t like them. I’ve heard about the plagiarism and it BUGS the hell out of me and makes me not want to read her books.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – LOVED THIS! But it took a LONG time to get into as it can drag at first and seems like it was rushed to print after the authors death, and didn’t get a chance to be edited properly. But I LOVED the book.

Perks of Being a Wallflower – I actually loved this!

The Fault in Our Stars – This was okay, but definitely felt it was overhyped.

Game of Thrones – Read after watching the show but still enjoyed. Nice to see how close to the book they stuck when doing the TV show.

The Notebook – Actually surprised myself by enjoying this, but have not enjoyed any other Sparks books except A Walk to Remember.
