Good morning folks! It’s been a busy week around here, which has meant very little time for reading — even when I was lazing around in the hotel room, since we had difficulty getting the WiFi password and finding out which of the three bins was meant for what. Lovely venue, badly executed amenities…
Anyway, the trip also means I haven’t been to the library this week, so all-in-all it’s a pretty low-key post. That said, I do have a few things to share!
Books acquired this week
Though I haven’t been to the library, I did get myself a book in order to top up an order for same-day delivery for something I needed for the trip, and I also got an e-ARC via Netgalley, so here they are!
Two very different vibes there, I know! I’m quite curious about The Virtues of Underwear, though it was a bit of an impulse-buy… and I’ve loved Emily Tesh’s novellas, so I’m excited for this novel.
Posts from this week
I’m getting enough of a backlog of reviews that I posted some even on days I had another type of post going up, so it’s a bumper crop this week!
- Poetry: Undying: A Love Story, by Michel Faber (4/5 stars)
- Gothic fantasy novella: But Not Too Bold, by Hache Pueyo (4/5 stars)
- Historical mystery: Murder at the Fitzwilliam, by Jim Eldridge (2/5 stars)
- Chinese fantasy romance (danmei): Heaven Official’s Blessing, vol 6, by MXTX (4/5 stars)
- SF graphic novel: .self, by Christopher Sebela et al (2/5 stars)
- Non-fiction: The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women, by Nancy Marie Brown (3/5 stars)

What I’m reading
First of all, let’s start with the usual: what books have I finished in the last week and plan to review here soon? Let’s see…
As you see, not as much reading as usual, but nonetheless, there we go! And for this weekend… I’m really not sure. I want to read some more manga, which I don’t usually review here, but I’m also knee-deep in Lucy Worsley’s biography of Agatha Christie, and The Book-Makers by Adam Smyth is due back at the library on Monday, so there’s plenty to be getting on with!
Linking up with Reading Reality’s Stacking the Shelves, Caffeinated Reviewer’s The Sunday Post, and the Sunday Salon over at Readerbuzz, as usual!
I don’t post all the books I’ve read and am lagging in reviewing them on goodreads too. Have fun with your new selections.
I have all my reviews written at least, and yes, don’t post them all either — but I read 1-2 books a day in general at the moment, so the backlog builds up all the same when I only post four reviews a week. XD
I’m the same…just posted about the latest Roddy Doyle book and realized I never posted about the first two in the series on Goodreads!
I do at least keep up with writing the reviews on StoryGraph! It’s just getting them posted here, since I try to keep it to one post a day…
The Virtues of Underwear looks interesting. I need to get caught up on reviews myself, there’s never enough hours in the day.
I’m very curious about it!
Luckily, I have all the reviews written, it’s just a matter of posting them. A backlog’s built up because I usually only post four reviews a week, but I read 1-2 books a day…
I don’t always post about every book I read. Some of the books I read are probably not books that a lot of others might be interested in; these are the ones I skip.
I’m glad you got to enjoy a trip!
Same! But even so, reading 1-2 books a day tends to build up a backlog, since I do read a lot of things I like to talk about and share.
I watched the show that Lucy Worsley did about Agatha Christie and was really impressed by what she uncovered since hers was at least the fourth documentary of Christie’s life that I’ve watched in recent years. I’ll be interested in hearing about her book. I think I wrote a post about the show….Here it is: The Mystery Queen
Ah interesting, I didn’t know she’d done a documentary too. So far I’m finding the book interesting!
I am such a slow reader, compared to you all. Though, I do have plenty of things going on in my life, if that’s an excuse. Probably not, as I read as much as I want.
I don’t think you need an excuse! As long as you’re enjoying reading, that’s all that matters.
All of these books are new to me. I’ see a few I want to Google.
Ah, anything in particular? 😀
Undying: A Love Story & the biography of Agatha Christie
I’m enjoying the biography so far! It helps that it has short chapters, so it’s really easy to digest.
I hope you enjoyed your trip despite the problem with your amenities.!
The Virtues of Underwear could be a really good read for all the historical book readers out there. I love a good historical romance and often find myself looking up things I read in them out of curiosity.
The Virtues of Underwear is so intriguing. I think I’d have impulse bought it too! Stopping by from The Sunday Post. Have a lovely week.
Oooh I need to head to NetGalley and get The Incandescent! Hope you have a good week:-)
Tammy @ Books, Bones & Buffy recently posted…Buffy’s Corner 11/3/24 – Looking at the Week Ahead
Your upcoming books look good. I hope you enjoy them.
Have a great week!
Here’s hoping! 🙂 Thanks for dropping by.
A very eclectic mix of books this week, LOL! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier.
As always, haha. 😀
The Virtues of Underwear has to be one of the best titles ever!
Yes, it amused me! I’m quite curious about that one; I’ll have to get round to it soon.
You have such a variety of books. I read more genres than some people but mostly fiction and mostly with a bit of mystery and a bit of romance. Fantasy, Urban fantasy, romantic suspense, mystery, or a bit of regular romance. I don’t read as much non-fiction or historical fiction.
Anne – Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Yes, I’m similar! 🙂 I’ll read a little bit of anything that catches my interest, really.
Guess I won’t be picking up Murder at the Fitzwilliam after you gave it two stars. Was it really ghastly? Boring?
My Sunday Salon
My review’s up, so you could read that! 🙂 It’s linked above in the post, but here’s the link again.
2/5 for me is “it’s okay”; I found the characterisation of one of the protagonists inconsistent, and didn’t really get deeply involved. Plus, I somehow never realised I’d read the book before?! I just found that I’d previously reviewed it in 2019. I did decide to read the second book now, and I liked that more.
Both the books you acquired recently sound super good I’m curious about the underwear one since I like learning about the history of clothing. Also, Enchanted Creatures sounds amazing! Good on you for posting so many backlog reviews, I definitely don’t post a review for every book I read and if I don’t post a review soon after reading It just doesn’t happen for me lol.
Anyway here’s my stacking the shelves: https://darkshelfofwonders.com/october-2024-wrap-up-stacking-the-shelves/
I love the history of clothes too — it’s weird, because I’m not a fan of fashion per se, but it’s a good marker of the way people’s attitudes to clothes have changed!
I haven’t heard of Emily Tesh, but your endorsement and that gorgeous cover is defniitely making me want to read The Incandescent!
Oh, Silver in the Wood and the sequel are lovely, highly recommended!
