Greetings folks! It’s definitely getting autumnal here, and though the sun is bright outside the window, it’s chilly. Probably my favourite sort of weather, really — though if it stays this cold, I’m going to need to acquire some gloves before I next cycle down to the library, ahaha.
Books acquired
Once more, it’s been a busy week for library books, since a couple of holds came in and I found where they keep the recent releases. Here’s the library haul!
I also got some poetry collections, but I’m not sure whether I’ll end up reviewing those here; so far there’s some I’ve wanted to review, and some where I feel I have nothing useful to say. At least, not enough to fill up a review. So I’ll leave those out of the haul for now.
I did also get an e-ARC for review from Tor, which looks fascinating and promises me a twisty plot like Dorothy L. Sayers. We’ll see!
Posts from this week
As usual, let’s start with the reviews!
- Romance: Book Lovers, by Emily Henry (3/5 stars)
- Non-fiction: Around the Ocean in 80 Fish & Other Sea Life, by Helen Scales, illustrated by Marcel George (4/5 stars)
- Graphic novel: The Baker and the Bard, by Fern Haught (3/5 stars)
- Non-fiction: Universal Basic Income, by Karl Widerquist (3/5 stars)
And the other posts:
What I’m reading
This week I spent a lot of time with library books, since I keep overdoing it and getting loads at once (it’s like my brain refuses to accept that they’ll be there next time). I suspect my weekend will be much the same, as I have a hold waiting for me at the library. Here’s the usual peek at the books I’ve finished this week (at least the ones I plan to review on the blog):
For right now, I’m reading Yellowface, The Book at War, and of course, volume 7 of Heaven Official’s Blessing. I’ll probably also pick up The Mountain in the Sea in the course of the weekend… or maybe another non-fiction, since The Book at War is rather slow.
Either way, I hope to spend plenty of time reading.
Hope you all have a good weekend too!
Linking up with Reading Reality’s Stacking the Shelves, Caffeinated Reviewer’s The Sunday Post, and the Sunday Salon over at Readerbuzz, as usual!
Hope you like Yellowface, an unusual book about the publishing industry. I hope to read more of her books.
I did indeed like Yellowface, which I finished up over the weekend. It’s an interesting satire; I think it’s quite different to her other work.
“Enchanted Creatures: Our Monsters and Their Meaning“ sounds fascinating — however, while it was published in the UK last August, it won’t be available in the US until next spring! I might have to order it from the UK though that’s pricy.
I’ve read a couple of the others on your list — you were lucky to find the Osman book at the library. I loved it (reviewed it last week).
Have a good week… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I actually just put a hold on the Osman book, but I was surprised how quickly I got it! I guess it was faster as it’s the first book in the series, so most people have read it.
I brought home three new releases from the library this week, and all three are due back in two weeks, with long holds lists. I guess this is a big release time of the year. I actually have one more that came in after I received these three. I’m waiting to pick it up at the last possible moment!
If my library books ever stop arriving, I want to read the Osman book. A nice person left it in my Little Free Library.
Oof, that’s one reason I hesitate sometimes about getting new books from the library! I’m so whim-driven in my reading, I worry I won’t manage to read them in time, and then I’ll have just held up the queue for no reason, haha.
I do the same thing with the library and it sees they like to arrive all at once!
Very much so! It’s very sneaky of them.
I had a big library haul this week too! I hope you enjoy all of these. Have a great weekend!
Gotta love our libraries. 😀
I was about to comment that I didn’t know this book by Agatha Christie called “Lucy Worsley”, when I realized it’s the opposite
This sounds like an interesting read, I’ve been curious about Agatha Christie’s life story ever since I discovered she went missing for a while…
Haha, that’s always a weird thing with biographies that are just given the name of the person being written about. Lucy Worsley mentions in her intro that she believes Christie was fairly clear (in various scattered statements over the years) about what happened with the disappearance, so I’m very curious what she concludes (and what the evidence is).
That would be interesting to find out!
I loved The Stardust Grail, I hope you do too. I need to get a copy of Murder By Memory, that cover is killer! Have a good week:-)

I hadn’t seen anyone talking about The Stardust Grail, but the title and cover just caught my eye and I thought I’d give it a shot! Good to hear from someone who enjoyed it, heh.
I still have not read Yellowface. I hope you enjoy it, Nicky.
It was an interesting one, I ended up quite enjoying it!
Autumn is my favourite time of year! I love everything about it even the changeable weather. 🙂
Hope you enjoy your library haul!
Me too! Though I’m wishing right now that it would rain a little less so I can cycle down to the library, hahaha.
This!!! “it’s like my brain refuses to accept that they’ll be there next time”
I have two books I haven’t even started yet and the library is going to suck them off my Kindle tomorrow!!!! I will try to remember that I can always get right back on the wait list for them.
It’s why I sometimes just go ahead and buy a book even if I can get it from the library — then it can await my whim!
Looks like a good haul. I need to get back to the library at some point but I am currently panic reading. I still take the kids so they are getting their library fun
The weather here is getting chiller. I prefer it to bright hot sunshine, especially on the school run
Have a great week next week!

I definitely prefer chillier weather too — I find it way easier to warm up if I’m a little cold than to cool down.
Yellowface and The Stardust Grail are on my TBR. The Thursday Murder Club is just fun and charming.

I liked Yellowface, though it’s not my usual sort of book!
Sorcery and Cecelia is delightful! It’s been years since I read it; I should go back and read it again. I’d like to read The Thursday Murder Club and Lucy Worsley’s biography of Agatha Christie. And I would dearly love to get my hands on a hardcover copy of The Lost Words. It’s so lovely.
Enjoy this week’s reading, and the new ARC whenever you get to it!

It really is, I loved it! It was a first-time read for me.
The Zoology Guide to the Galaxy sound interesting.
Have a great week.
Hi, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m not comfortable with you commenting on my blog. As I previously explained, I am non-binary, and you have made it quite clear you think that’s “delusional”. Please never comment here again. I do not know how you evaded my blacklist in order to comment, but I find that extremely uncomfortable as well. Please leave me alone.
I loved Yellowface, though I believe Babel is way more brilliant.
Thanks to you, I just requested Murder by Memory on Netgalley! My first 2025 book

I enjoyed it too! I really need to read Babel. And I’m really looking forward to Murder by Memory.
Enchanted Creatures looks really interesting. I tried to look for it in my library’s catalog but couldn’t find it, and then I realized it’s relatively new. I’ll have to keep a lookout for it. I hope you enjoy all of these!
Hope you enjoy The Thursday Murder Club, I really like that series.
It’s really feeling like autumn here as well suddenly. We had some nice sunny autumn days and then the rainy autumn days, there’s definitely a chill in the air. I already had to use my gloves a few times. I’ve been trying to read some more non-fiction this year and so far it’s going well. Too bad your non-fiction read is a bit slow, hopefully you can find another one to read as well.
