What are you currently reading?
No surprises here this week: I’m partway through the next Daisy Dalrymple book, which is To Davy Jones Below. I’m enjoying Alec and Daisy being married at last, and so far free of making asinine assumptions about each other’s emotions (I’m still not over Styx and Stones and the weird blow-up in that book that lasted all of a chapter). Sending them off on a boat to the US is a good way of varying the setting.
What have you recently finished reading?
I finished up rereading Susan Cooper’s Greenwitch; it felt so short! I love all the stuff it hints at with Barney being able to scry — there’s always so much material in this series for wondering about things for yourself. And Cooper is just so good with characters: the resentment of Will by Simon and Barney was great. Of course they didn’t welcome another boy hanging round with their Great-Uncle and having adventures too with open arms!
What will you be reading next?
I need to finish a library book or two, so probably John Man’s Ninja, or my reread of Jeff Vandermeer’s Authority (which I’ve been neglecting horribly). Or I might just curl up with my reread of The Lord of the Rings, which has also gone untouched so long. The possibilities are more or less endless.
What are you reading right now?
I’m getting into a bit of scandal reading The Royal Marriages by Lady Colin Campbell-enjoying it so far!
Sometimes one needs a good gossipy read! Is that how you started the year?
OK, you did ask! I’m reading Félix Fénéon’s ‘Novels in Three Lines’, a Rumer Godden novel set in Italy, Charlotte Brontë’s’ Shirley’ and Robin Ince’s ‘I’m a Joke…’ I’ve just finished ‘Northern Lights’ and scheduled a review of ‘The Dark is Rising’. Well, it’s a new year!
You’re getting as bad as me with all of those on the go!
Happy new year! I’ve been neglecting my reading as we’ve been travelling and/or immersed in family – I finally finished The Tea Master and the Detective last night and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. I liked it better than most Sherlock Holmes (I’m not a fan), but then I also think the Sherlockian elements were the least successful bits of it (oh look, still not a fan). But I could stand to read more mindship murder mysteries in space?
I’m not sure what I’ll pick up next – I’d like to finish the Voidwitch saga, but I’ve also got a few (very old) ARCs on my conscience that it would be good to clear. And I’m signed up to a read-along of Mistborn, which has been on my shelf for yeeeears. But Empire of Sand is very tempting. Still, I suspect Mars might win this round.
