Top Ten Tuesday

With Thanksgiving coming up, it’s probably not a surprise that this week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme is about bookish things you’re thankful for. I’m not American, but it’s always good to reflect on things you’re thankful for.

  1. My mother’s recommendations. Everything I read now, I can pretty much trace back to her recommendations when I was around nine years old. She seeded the ground for my love of science fiction and fantasy, and somewhat later, detective fiction as well.
  2. School. Because it was boring enough to push me to read under the table during class, thus nourishing both my love of reading and my ability to multitask.
  3. My wife. Because who else could I squee at so often, push books at so often, and feel a warm fuzzy glow at getting recommendations right for so often?
  4. My sister. Well, she’d be the other one, other than my wife and to a lesser degree, Mum.
  5. Dad. Because he has built me nearly endless amounts of bookshelves over the years.
  6. My bookshelves. Because let’s face it, they put up with a lot.
  7. My friends. Including people I know via blogging! A great source of recommendations and, I’ll admit it, gifts in the shape of books.
  8. Bookmarks. Well, really, what would we do without this humble class of object?
  9. Book clubs. I wouldn’t have discovered Jo Walton, for example, without book clubs…
  10. Libraries. Of course.

How about you?

  1. My dad always hated it when I said I was getting a new bookcase as he was always left to build the things! That always led to swearing and frustration…! My bookmark collection is pretty good and I just added a Game of Thrones set to it which is pretty cool…

    • Haha, my dad has done it here, but I have built my own on occasion! The Ikea Billy ones are a godsend. I have a fun Game of Thrones one which has stats like the death toll…

  2. What a wonderful thing it is to have a mother who encouraged reading. I try to be that to out children. My mother is into reading now more than at any other point in her life. That may be largely in part to her being retired now and having the time, but I also think it has a lot to do with me encouraging her. I don’t come from a family who has the love of reading.

    • All my family are pretty bookish, fortunately for me. My dad doesn’t read fiction anymore, but he still doesn’t complain (much) about the heaps of books still in my room at their house. I need more shelves in my wife’s place…

  3. I owe my love for reading to my parents, too. Mostly my mom. I have a younger brother and she read to us every evening until we were well into primary school, even when we could read by ourselves.

And I push books at my husband, too. I even got him hooked on Marillier!
