Stacking the Shelves

You know how I was talking about only three books, this week? Well, it’s a multiple of three? — Why are you looking at me like that? I just felt like an adventure, okay, and my adventures involve books (and awesome second-hand bookshops). And… you couldn’t expect me to leave a bookshop without buying anything, right? Right?

So yeah. Big haul; twenty-seven books in all, counting books from publishers, not counting comics, though Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel both came out in the last week (eee!).

Wait, I just redid the total. Twenty-eight? Man, I dunno. Just look at the pretties.

ARCs/review copies

Cover of The Genome by Sergei Lukyanenko Cover of City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett Cover of The Heart Does Not Grow Back by Fred Venturini

Cover of Black Swan, White Raven, ed Ellen Datlow Cover of Joan of Arc, by Helen Castor

I’ve heard good things about the middle two, particularly City of Stairs, and I’ve read some of Lukyanenko’s work before. Plus, with a title like The Genome, no one’s surprised my ears pricked up. I’ve read other work by Helen Castor and enjoyed the way she writes. And Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling are just… legendary editors and it’s high time I read their anthologies.

Freebie

Cover of The Archer Who Shot Down Suns by Benjanun Sriduangkaew

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Benjanun Sriduangkaew, so when I was alerted to this being a freebie, off I went at speed. And that’s the end of the modest sections: onto the rest of my acquisitions!

Dead tree

Cover of Five Hundred Years After by Steven Brust 6079793 Cover of Brokedown Palace by Steven Brust

Cover of Ombria in Shadow by Patricia McKillip Cover of The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip Cover of The Midnight Queen by Sylvia Izzo Hunter

Cover of Hero by Perry Moore  Cover of Tessa Masterson Will Go To Prom by Emily Franklin and Brandon Halpin Cover of Salt by Adam Roberts

Cover of Watchtower by Elizabeth A. Lynn Cover of Dancers of Arun by Elizabeth A. Lynn Cover of The Northern Girl by Elizabeth A. Lynn

Cover of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean Dominique Bauby Cover of The Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was mentioned a lot in the neurobiology class I took on Coursera (a class I recommend if it comes round again, by the way). Lots of classics, otherwise; stuff from the 101 best SF novels list I’m reading; Steven Brust and Patricia McKillip are tried and true for me…

Ebooks

Cover of Aristoi by Walter Jon Williams Cover of Scale Bright by Benjanun Sriduangkaew Cover of The Taxidermist's Daughter by Kate Mosse

Cover of Under the Skin by Michael Faber Cover of The Falling Woman by Pat Murphy Cover of Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas

Cover of Genesis by Poul Anderson Cover of Glimmering by Elizabeth Hand

Most of these, though not all, are for the aforementioned 101 best list I’m reading my way through. I swear.

And finally…

Comics

Captain Marvel #7 Ms Marvel #8

That Captain Marvel cover had better make a lot more sense in context, because I am not a fan of Carol Danvers looking like a cringy heroine from a horror movie who is about to get eaten. The lady kicks ass, people. Steve Rogers is disapproving of you right now. Right now.

Anyway! Anyone been sticking to resolutions better than me?

    • I reaaaaally don’t know when I’ll get the time. I’m hoping when I’m visiting my partner I’ll have some time to just curl up and read (while petting our bunny, of course). Thanks!

Aw, but sticking to just small amounts of books would make life boring. These books needed ADOPTING! Now they have a happy home. 😉 The only one I really recognise is Dangerous Girls which is aaaaamazing. Seriously, it messes with your head completely. I recommend it a million percent. XD
    My Sunday Post!

  2. That’s a pretty sizable haul! The only one I’m really familiar with is Dangerous Girls. I picked up a copy of it a few weeks ago, but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. Soon, though. I’ve heard some great things about it.

Hope you enjoy all your new lovelies!

    My StS!

  3. After a recent spate of decimating my book collection I could hardly bear to read this post. Imagining a future need to build an extra storey or tower where you live to accommodate your ongoing ‘acquisitioning’…

Ooh, The Genome. I really liked Night Watch and I hope the rest of Lukyanenko’s books are just as good! I’ve seen lots of people talk about Dangerous Girls, can’t wait to see what you think!

    • I’ve actually read Hero before, but gave away my copy, and now I have the urge to reread it. Which is funny, because I didn’t give it that high a rating before, but I wasn’t as into comics/superheroes at all back then, so it might be different now! Thanks for commenting.

  5. Wow. Impressive haul! City of Stairs has been taunting me all week. I should just buy it. I know I’m going to eventually. Enjoy your books and thanks for stopping by!

  6. I haven’t read any of these but Dangerous Girls, and it is very, very good. I wasn’t as thrilled about it as everyone else (but that’s my own doing, I totally guessed the ending!) but it’s such a great book. I need to read Dangerous Boys soon! Happy Reading, I hope you enjoy all your awesome books!!!

  7. Oh, wow, Nikki! That’s quite a multiple of three you got this week *grins* and I think it’s really cool that you’re reading a top 101 books this year. It’s always nice to catch up on books you’ve wanted to read for a while.
And I totally know what you mean about going into a bookstore and not leaving empty-handed. That’s just not possible.
I hope you’ll enjoy all your new books. Happy reading 🙂

  8. You really went all out! The comics looks really cool. My bf is a massive fan of all Batman related comics but these Marvel comics look more like my thing :)! Happy reading!

  9. Omg *eyes glaze over* these are all the pretties! I really hope you enjoy reading them and I’ll definitely be checking out (read: buying) a few of them.

It’s upsetting that Perry Moore, the author of Hero, died in 2011. My co-blogger adored that book and he was really torn up about his death. He told me that the book definitely had more story to tell.

I love that you got comics as well. I hope you review them. Joel, my coblogger, reviews graphic novels and comics for the blog and it’d be nice to see more of them in the blogosphere.

Here’s my Stacking the Shelves if you’d like to check us out.

    • *grin* I’m so glad I spread my good example.

Oh wow, I didn’t know about that. I seem to remember that when Hero was a lot more new, he did swing by a friend’s blog and spoke to them about their review, and he seemed pretty cool.

I do review comics, yes. I have a bit of a backlog of comics to catch up on reading, but I do love them!

  10. WOW!! You picked up a TON of books this week. That would keep me busy for the rest of the year.
The Heart Does Not Grow Back looks very interesting. I’m going to have to check that one out.

I hope you enjoy all of your new books!! Thanks for stopping by my STS!!

    • It’ll probably keep me busy for a fair while, heh. But that’s half the fun!

The Heart Does Not Grow Back sounds really interesting, and I’ve seen some very good reviews. I’m really hopeful.
