Since I’ve run out of reviews to post right now — I know, I don’t know how that happened, I had one day off reading and suddenly it’s a week later and I’m still playing catch up — I’m going to post my #ShelfLove January update today. The January post encourages us to share our TBRs, lists or pictures, whatever works. Well, I already have my TBR shamefully displayed on my site: hit Mount TBRย and it’ll show you my acquired/unread lists for the last five years. Gulp.
But here, also have a picture of the new set of shelves my dad hacked together for me. It’s on wheels, the top serves as a desk (with my standing desk on top), and there’s two sides. I got just about all my books out of boxes and onto the shelves with this baby!
It doesn’t look like much extra space, but it’s something. And yes, you can see another set of shelves immediately behind it, the side of a large bookcase to the right of it, and there’s another set out of sight. And that box you can see is full of books. Almost all of those are books I haven’t read yet.
And then… at my parents’ house, I have a set of shelves that double as a coffee table, a shelf above my mirror, five shelves around my desk which is currently alsoย piled with books, a small set of shelves by the door and a set of shelves up to the ceiling directly as you enter the room. And boxes. Lots of. Fortunately, most of the books here are books I’ve read, though I think there’s another box worth of Christmas books going back to where I normally live when I go…
From this you can tell that A) I have a lot of books and B) my father is wildly indulgent, though he pretends not to be, and continues pulling ideas for more bookshelves out of his hat.
In terms of sticking to my goals, by the way, I’m doing well:
- 6/51+ already owned books read
- Spent: ยฃ6 out of ~ยฃ30 budget (budget is 10% of my income)
As for my other resolutions:
- No books impulse-bought
- Read every day
- Bed before midnight… mostly
- Up before ten… mostly
- Only bought one book from a series at a time
- Posted to the blog every day
- Commented on at least one other blog every day
- Tithed 10% already this month (to Stonewall)
- Done two hours volunteering
- Reading/reviewing books from NG/etc… in progress
I love the shelves your father put together, that’s a fantastic idea! My father is more likely try and dismantle a bookcase than put one together and ask when I’m getting rid of my books ๐ I’ve not bought any books this month – so far, and I’ve donated 35 to the library which means I get to buy 3 books at the end of the month if I stick to my goals!
Ha, yeah, my dad does keep prodding me to jettison some books, too. He’s just realistic about the likelihood of that…
Wow, that’s more than I’ve donated to our library this month and I’m on our committee! I’ll have to step it up.
No bookbuying? How abstemious! New bookshelves? Very ingenious! Books in boxes? Been there, but virtually all on shelves, higgledy-piggledy for now!
I tend to box up books I’ve finished and want to keep and send them to my parents periodically, and then they sit in boxes in my room waiting for me to find them some shelf space. Which is getting harder and harder all the time, though when I clear up some of my other shelves I should just about be able to shelve everything…
Ooh a bookshelf on wheels that’s pretty cool:) good job already reading 6 books!
Pretty much a necessity in my room, ha. I’ve always joked that if my dad stood still long enough, I’d turn him into a bookshelf.
Wow! I love these shelves. You definitely own a looot of books ๐
Far too many, my family would say…
That bookshelf on wheels is such a creative idea, I like it. *And* it’s your desk, another bonus.
Glad to see you’re still meeting your goals! ๐
The idea was mine, but Dad figured out how to do it, ha. With the cupboard to keep my magazines and stuff in, too!
I’m being good! Kinda.
Please have your father drop by my house and install some shelves for me. I have 2 great unusual spots that could use shelves. ๐
Thanks for sharing and being a part of the Shelf Love Challenge.

Ha, if I could put him to work doing that, that’d be awesome.
Hmm, I wonder where all those old library book trolleys go? Perhaps a home storage solution akin to yours?
Actually, Cardiff library is closing a bunch of branches, and my library (the community library I’m on the committee of, that is) is hoping to get some shelves and such from them…
Branches going? Boo!
Recycling shelving? Yay!
Indeed!
Woohoo! Great job on sticking to your goals. ๐ I’m trying to work on reading
…more books that I own too. ๐ (I forgot to finish that in my previous comment. :D)
Haha, I do that when I’m commenting all the time! Thanks for dropping by.
Those shelves are awesome! Although I think I would be terrified of putting an monitor on anything with wheels, haha. I’m guess it’s pretty sturdy?
Oh, very sturdy, and it has brakes!
Those shelves are seriously excellent. That kind of thing always makes me wish I was handier at DIY. I’m in need of some new shelves despite the serious amount of inbuilt shelving in my flat.
Also, I too store books I’ve read at my mum’s house in boxes. I tell myself that one day, when I own my own place, I’ll move them all over to it… we shall see! Well done on keeping to your challenges so far!
Me too! I’m lucky Dad puts up with my ideas and hauls his bits of DIY round the country for me, haha.
Yes, one day! Though I notice my mother’s books are still at her mother’s place…
Parents: useful for both DIY and storage ๐
6 is a really great start to the challenge! I really desperately needed this challenge and am so glad I joined ๐
Me too! It’s helping me keep on top of my book buying.
